Our Chemical Hearts // Book Review
I read Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland back in September and it is a book that has stuck with me. However, I'm unsure of how to translate my thoughts into words for this review, so let's see how this goes!
Here is my review:
Title: Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland
Format: Paperback
Pages: 313
Published by: Hot Key Books
Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance
'Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slow-mo, heart palpitating, can't-eat-can't-sleep kind of love that he's been hoping for just hasn't been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he's been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything's about to change.
Grace isn't who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys' clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It's obvious there's something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again.'
Where on earth do I begin with this book? Not only could I not put it down, it's a story that has stuck with me. It's one of those books that makes you laugh, smile, cry... All of the emotions, this book is the definition of an emotional whirlwind.
“...Tell me you believe that our lives are anything more than a ridiculous cascade of random chances.”
I immediately fell in love with the characters, especially Henry. The author portrayed exactly what first love and relationships are like for us teenagers that are a little bit on the shy and nerdy side. So yes, I did cringe a bit when I read this book!
Then we have Grace, the mysterious girl that turned up to school wearing baggy men's clothing and a cane. To most people, they'd take one look and she would be forgotten, but Henry was wonderstruck and could not stop thinking about this new girl.
The two soon become acquainted when they are both assigned to work on the upcoming school newspaper. Sounds normal, right? Henry thought so too, until he got to know Grace and his life was turned upside down. Who knew such a quiet, otherwise normal girl, would have so many secrets?
“Grace Town is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”
This is by far, one of the best YA contemporary books I have read so far. I loved the writing style, I loved how it captivated my attention from beginning to end, I loved the characters and their true to life problems. Oh and the humour, yes I did laugh a bit whilst reading this book which is very rare for me!
“We must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy, Grace. Reading Harry Potter is what is right.”
Overall, I have given this book a 🌟🌟🌟🌟
And I cannot wait for the author to write her next book!
