The Tethering // Book Review
Guess what? I finished another book!
Yesterday evening I finished reading The Tethering by Megan O'Russell.
Goodreads Synopsis:
'All sixteen-year-old Jacob Evans wants is to win the heart of Emilia Gray, but with order in the magical world crumbling, war threatening, and Emilia's boyfriend living across the hall, he may never have the chance.
Jacob Evans loses everything he has ever known and is tossed into a world of magic. The Dragons, a group of rebel wizards, are threatening to expose the existence of magic to humans.
Jacob is determined to find a way to fit into Emilia's family, but as his powers grow, so does the danger.
With the death toll mounting, Jacob is accused of acts of rebel terrorism and must fight to stay in a world he's only just beginning to discover. When Emilia's life is threatened, Jacob must risk everything to save her.
Does he have the power to rescue her in time?
And what could their survival cost?'
My review:
This book follows a teenage boy named Jacob Evans who, originally is living an ordinary life. However, when an incident happens at school, not only does he get told some devastating news, but his best friend pays a visit. A best friend that left unexpectedly years before. A girl he hadn't heard from, who just disappeared from his life. A girl that he is in love with.
That same day, Jacob is also told something that will completely change his life. He is a wizard.
At first, that seemed like great fun but then Jacob and his new wizard friends discover that the magical world that they live in is in grave danger. Jacob has to learn how to use his new magical powers to keep himself and his one true love alive.
To begin with, I thought this book would be loosely based on Harry Potter, because of the main character finding out that he is a wizard. However, I was relieved to find out that the whole story was quite different. The ideas were original and really clever, I love how different this book is.
I feel like the beginning of the book started really well, but the excitement had died down a little bit by the middle, I think this is due to the author introducing the characters and forming the plot for this series of books. Luckily, it soon picked up again towards the end of the book (my favourite part). The last few chapters were full of adventure and drama, which I loved!
I don't normally read fantasy books, I am really glad that I read this book though. It was a nice, short read with shorter chapters that made the book fast-paced and left you wanting to read more.
The ending was really good as well! It was left on a great cliff-hanger, I really need to read the next book in the series.
I have given this book a four out of five stars.
If you enjoy reading fantasy, then this is definitely the book for you!
