Confessions of a Shopaholic // Book Review

This week I finished reading Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella (also known as The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic).

This is my second Sophie Kinsella book and I'm happy to say that it was just as great as the first one that I read (Finding Audrey, you can read my review here).

Let's get on with the review!

Goodreads Synopsis:

'Becky Bloomwood has what most twenty-five-year-olds only dream of: a flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is, she can't actually afford it --- not any of it.

Her job writing at Successful Saving magazine not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. Still, how can she resist that perfect pair of shoes? Or the divine silk blouse in the window of that ultra-trendy boutique? But lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank --- letters with large red sums she can't bear to read --- and they're getting ever harder to ignore. She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Her only consolation is to buy herself something ... just a little something ...

Finally, a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life --- and the lives of those around her --- forever.'

My Review:

Although, for some reason, this book took me quite a while to read, I actually really enjoyed it.

This story follows Rebecca Bloomwood, a girl that works in finance and loves to shop. So much so, she's in a lot of debt. Even though she writes columns in a magazine giving people money advice, Becky struggles to cope with her own money troubles and ends up running away from them. Which only makes matters worse and let's just say, she goes a little crazy.

I really enjoyed the way this book is written, it's as if Becky is talking to you like you're best friends. At times, you will love her and at times you will loathe her. She has a habit of trying to look better than she is, which means she ends up lying, quite a lot. What Becky doesn't realise is that she's already everything she's wanted to be and in this book you follow her journey in learning that she doesn't need to change everything about herself to be a better person.

One of the things I enjoyed about this book is that although it's about money problems and finance, it's not too technical and boring. Every now and then, between the chapters are letters from banks which made me laugh. Becky often pretends to be ill, or broken a bone to get out of paying a bill.

Another thing that I enjoyed it just how real Sophie Kinsella makes her characters. They're not all perfect like most fictional characters are, they all have real life problems.

This book is the first in the Shopaholic series, I can't wait to read the next one and to see what mayhem Becky creates next. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a funny, light-hearted read that will make you smile.

I have given this book a four out of five stars.
