Looking for Alaska // Book Review
A few days ago I finished reading my second book by John Green, Looking for Alaska.
So today, I'm writing a review for it!
Goodreads Synopsis:
'Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (François Rabelais, poet) even more.
He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself.
She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.
After. Nothing is ever the same.'
My review:
I've been putting off writing this review for a while because when I finished this book, my head was full of thoughts and mixed opinions about what had happened. This story has a major plot twist and I've decided that it's a great twist in the story (although, rather upsetting).
Looking for Alaska follows Miles Halter when he decides to attend a boarding school, because he feels like he needs to live his 'great perhaps' and that 'great perhaps' will never happen if he stays living at home with his ordinary life and his loving parents.
So Miles moves and meets his soon-to-be best friends. Little did he know that he would fall in love with one of them.
'If people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.'
Miles' new friends teach him how to let loose and live the life of a careless teenager that just wants to have fun. Which he does, he has a lot of fun pulling pranks and breaking the rules.
It's even better when you get to do all of that with the person that you love.
Alaska is a carefree, pretty and intelligent girl that catches Miles' eye straight away. There's only one problem, she has a boyfriend. A boyfriend that she claims to love.
But Miles doesn't let that stop him.
One day, everything seems to be going great for Miles, he actually had everything he wanted, until one strict rule is broken and something terrible happens.
If you've read the book, you'll know what I'm talking about. That thing.
I was shocked when it happened and really quite upset. It was very unexpected.
When this thing happened (I'm not going to tell you as it would spoil the whole book for you) I immediately sussed out the ending, which was disappointing.
Because of that, I didn't enjoy reading the rest of the book as much as I would've liked to.
I still really liked the book though, I loved the characters and the storyline. I loved how Miles knew everyone's last words, not only is it interesting to read but it's fun to read a book with original characters that aren't predictable.
I gave this book a four out of five stars.
Overall, this book is really well written and an emotional rollercoaster. You will laugh, you might cry and you will definitely smile.
One thing I should point out, I don't recommend this book to younger readers.

I hope you enjoyed this review!

When I read "boarding school" and "pranks" I knew that I'd read it.
ReplyDeleteAnd you made me very curious about that twist !

DeleteEeek I've put off reading this book because some people have said it's not as good as his other work but you've definitely made me want to read it now, but not on the train when I go to work as I may end up crying in public!
ReplyDeleteI was put off reading some of his books as well, mainly because of how amazing The Fault in Our Stars is! I really recommend this book though, it's such a good story! Haha, yes, don't read it on the train! It nearly made me cry and I rarely cry at books!x
