Fangirl // Book Review
I recently finished this amazing book, Fangirl. I read this book with the lovely Eloise from Eloise is Reading, you can read her review here.
To be honest, I've been putting off writing this review, the task seemed too big and scary because this is such a good book. Don't you worry though, I have decided to take on that task today and write this review.
Here goes:
Goodreads Synopsis:
'Cath is a Simon Snow fan.
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...
But for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.
Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like characters for every movie premiere.
Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.
Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.
For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?
Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?
And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?'
My Review:
Okay, where do I begin? Firstly, I need to point out that this is the first book that I've ever read by Rainbow Rowell. After reading this book, she may be one of my new favourite authors. I love her writing style, it sucks you in and it feels like you're living the story.
This book follows Cath, a girl that is a twin and is moving to college. Cath has always felt comfortable living in her own little world of fan fiction, where she can make anything and everything happen. She doesn't enjoy stepping out of her comfort zone, even when her twin sister does. It's not until she's left behind that Cath starts taking small steps to experience new things in life. Which involves actually leaving the dorm room to find some food.
By doing so, Cath makes new friends - her roommate, her roommate's boyfriend and that guy with the perfect hair.
It's when she finds out that her roommate actually doesn't have a boyfriend that the story gets even more interesting.
'You give away nice like it doesn't cost you anything' - Rainbow Rowell
I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I love the relationship between Cath and that guy. They have to be one of the cutest couples, ever.
One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is how real it is, you can relate to the characters, they are going through real life situations. I didn't want this book to end, I tried my hardest to read it slowly, but it was impossible. I finished it within a few days.
I loved watching the characters grow into young adults. I just wish this book was longer, I didn't want to leave the world of Cath, Levi, Wren and Reagan!
If you haven't read this book, what are you doing? Go and get it now! You won't regret it. It will make you laugh and people will probably be wondering why you keep smiling at a book, but it's worth it. It's one of my favourite stories.
I also really enjoyed reading the small snippets of Cath's fan fiction.
I have given this book a strong five out of five stars.
