The Little Shop of Happy Ever After // Book Review
I recently finished reading The Little Shop of Happy Ever After by Jenny Colgan, which is a lovely cosy story that is perfect for this time of the year.
Here is my review:
Title: The Little Shop of Happy Ever After by Jenny Colgan
Format: Paperback
Pages: 343
Published by: Sphere in 2016
Genres: Romance, Chick Lit, Fiction
Goodreads Synopsis:
'Given a back-room computer job when the beloved Birmingham library she works in turns into a downsized retail complex, Nina misses her old role terribly - dealing with people, greeting her regulars, making sure everyone gets the right books for their needs. Then a new business nobody else wants catches her eye: owning a tiny little bookshop bus up in the Scottish highlands. No computers. Shortages. Out all hours in the freezing cold; driving with a tiny stock of books... not to mention how the little community is going to take to her, particularly when she stalls the bus on a level crossing... '
My Review:
I managed to read this book in just a few days, I immediately fell in love with the writing style. At the beginning of this book is a lovely bit written by the author about places to read books, it made me laugh quite a lot and also made me love reading even more, if that was even possible!
This book follows a girl called Nina who would prefer to spend all her days reading books rather than living the real life. She works in a library, which is about to shut down and she faces the problem of finding another job, something that she's struggling with. But then, she has a big idea, running her own bookshop in a van and taking it around the country - everyone's dream! All does not go as planned though when a few problems get in her way, one of which involves being on a train track when a train is coming at full speed...
I loved the characters in this book, especially Nina and her landlord Lennox. I could relate to Nina in so many ways, we can both forget about the real world and escape into a fantasy land for days. However, this book is about stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing new things, which is something I really need to try and do. Nina forgets about all of her worries and fears and takes control of her life, leaving behind the life she didn't really like and replacing it with one that she loves.
“Just do something. You might make a mistake, then you can fix it. But if you do nothing, you can't fix anything. And your life might turn out full of regrets.”
I really enjoyed reading about Scotland, it's a place that I love to visit and reading about it made me want to go there again, the descriptions felt so real and trust me, when you read this book you will want to pack everything up and start a bookshop business in Scotland. I am now desperate to do this, it's not good!
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the style of writing and the storyline was perfect, I will definitely be reading more of Jenny Colgan's books in the future.
I have given this book a four out of five stars.
You will enjoy this book if you enjoyed...
