My Review:
The Small Hand is a spooky ghost story which is perfect for reading around Halloween. It's a short book, I was able to read it in just one day! Which is pretty amazing for me!
This book follows Adam Snow, an antiquarian bookseller who was returning from a client one day when he accidentally took the wrong turning. Something made he keep on going though, until he reached a derelict house, the White House. Curiosity got the better of Adam as he got out of his car and made his way into the wilderness of a garden, where he is approached by a child, but not a living child, a ghost. A ghost that enjoys holding your hand and pulling you into water. A ghost that wants to drown you.
I had a few problems with this story, to begin with I didn't really enjoy the writing style, it kept going back and forth so I wasn't sure what was past and what was present, but after a while I got used to it. The other thing that bugged me was this it was very predictable, I sussed out the ending after reading only 50 or so pages. The last thing that I found annoying was that the main character practically asked for things to go wrong for him, he walked straight into these problems and didn't even try to avoid them, I guess that was to make the story a bit more interesting though.
I managed to read this book in one day, it's a pretty short book, only 204 pages long. The author did pretty well with the character building in this short book, which is difficult to do! I felt like when I finished this book, I knew Adam. I knew what he'd choose to do next and what he was thinking.
I recommend this book to people that are looking for a short, spooky read that you can read in just a couple of sittings. Don't worry, I didn't find this book scary at all. I was a bit worried about starting it as I thought I would be too scared to read it, but there were hardly any scenes that creeped me out, which was disappointing. So, if you're looking for a ghost story that will keep you up at night, then this isn't the book for you.
I have given this book three out of five stars.
You will enjoy this book if you enjoyed...
