Mum's Review:

Time to say goodbye by SD Robertson

So, I thought I’d read something slightly ‘different’… And saw this on my bookshelf and thought, yep I’ll give this a go!

Having lost people very close to me I’ve often wondered about the after life… What happens to those that pass away, do their spirits rise and do they pass over straight away or is there a period of grace?

I lost my Dad very suddenly 11 years ago… Shortly after he died I felt his presence by virtue of the smell of his favourite pipe tobacco yet there was no one around me at the time smoking their pipe. I knew then and believed that people just let you know, in their own way, that they are ok as they ‘pass’.

Reading this book has most definitely convinced me that what I believed was right. Whilst I know the book is fictional it made fascinating reading and I’m so glad I read it.

It is so beautifully written… Not only from the point of view from those characters that had passed away but also from the views of those left behind, including one very special 6 year old girl…

I loved the way it was written… There is one line that I especially loved that I will always remember concerning the memories of a very sick Dad, a line recited by the (already passed) son… 'Tears were pouring down Dad’s face now. It was a hard sight to witness but it held my gaze. He’d always been there to pour glue into the cracks in my life; now it was my turn to be strong for him'. I thought the ‘pouring of glue into the cracks’ was such a powerful way to describe how a parent tends to have the task of keeping everything together for their children, even when they’re adults themselves, yet there are times that task is reversed, role reversal.

There were other lines which I thought was so cleverly written… Such as ‘…so too will that terrible feeling they’ll have every morning when they slip free from the warm blanket of deep sleep and it dawns on them that the nightmare is real’ …When they slip free from the warm blanket of deep sleep… Amazing few words but so well put together to describe how the comfort of a warm blanket and deep sleep can feel so safe and secure yet we all must wake and face reality.

So, yes, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to read something different! It isn’t overly heavy or too in depth but it’s a book that simply covers a subject that I don’t think many of us really consider unless we lose someone very close to us… And we all ask ourselves the question…'what does happen when someone dies?' …Where do they go, what happens to their spirit, do they watch over me etc. etc…

The book certainly made me think and I’m so glad I read it and I would score it a 4 out of 5….

  1. I don't usually read those kind of books because I know how hard it is to catch the right tone to make the story believable and not fall into clichés.
I might consider reading this one since you said it's not too heavy... But I don't know, it seems so sad ><
    Anyway, great review !
